Ristorante Fontana: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Italian Restaurant with a Japanese Twist

An interior design project for a long-standing Italian restaurant in Japan

An Italian restaurant in Fukuoka, Japan, Ristorante Fontana, has undergone a remarkable transformation that seamlessly blends tradition and innovation. Led by creative director Gaku Takasu and his team, the design combines classical elements with modern touches, paying homage to the restaurant's tradition while evoking a sense of novelty.

The design team's vision was to create a space that would evoke the history of this long-standing restaurant. They also aimed to upcycle existing materials and create an interior where the image of geological strata would be associated with the passage of time.

One of the most eye-catching design elements is the marble artwork on the ceiling, which is modeled after the rose windows of the Milan Cathedral. This intricate mosaic adds a touch of elegance and grandeur to the space, creating a focal point that draws the eye upward.

Another standout feature is the main wall, which was fashioned using a traditional Japanese rammed earth technique. The design team pulverized the bricks from the old restaurant and mixed them with soil before compressing the mixture. This technique not only upcycles the existing materials but also creates the image of geological strata, representing the rich history of the restaurant.

The restaurant's layout was carefully planned to enhance the dining experience. A gallery was added in the corridor connecting the entrance hall to the dining room, providing a visual journey for patrons as they transition from one space to another. Additionally, a walk-in wine cellar was incorporated, allowing guests to admire an impressive collection of wines.

Collaborating with interior designer Sayo Teshima, lighting designers Tatuki Makamura and Hiroyuki Nagatomi, graphic designer Michio Kajiwara, and branding expert Hanae Yoshizaki, Gaku Takasu and his team created a luxurious design that combines classic and modern elements. The bespoke light fixtures and tailor-made design elements further enhance the sense of luxury and attention to detail.

This project, which started in 2017 and was completed in 2018, showcases the successful fusion of Italian and Japanese design sensibilities. By combining classical elements with innovative techniques, the design team has created a space that not only pays homage to the restaurant's tradition but also offers a unique and memorable dining experience.

Ristorante Fontana's remarkable design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With Ristorante Fontana, Gaku Takasu and his team have demonstrated their ability to transform a space, infusing it with history, elegance, and a touch of innovation. This Italian restaurant with a Japanese twist is a testament to the power of design to create a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.
